The number of vehicles plying on our roads has risen year on year, therefore there is a need for government guidelines that specify the emergency and safety standards that need to be implied in all kinds of transport systems. This will benefit commercial users as well as the public.
The government has taken steps against criminals involved in women and girl child abuse by giving them capital punishment but no preventive measures have been taken by the concerned government authorities to ensure the safety and security of women citizens. It is proposed to launch the initiative in a phased manner.
The compliance could begin in states like Delhi & Kerala who have the back end infrastructure ready. The systems could then be deployed in a phased manner in various states considering the availability of the vendors providing the back end services. The states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu where the working women population is very high can start implementation in phase 2 and follow by Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, etc. The solution can rely on the vendors who are providing the device to the states and can provide the back end infrastructure as a service, as a stop-gap arrangement. In the event, when the panic button is pressed a signal can be sent to the police control room of the state to take necessary actions. Thus, ensuring the safety of the passengers in distress.
The service providers can help in the transition till states are ready with their emergency response infrastructure. Yet it is still difficult to manage these many automobiles on the road. As a result, the concerned authorities are experiencing massive traffic and congestion, along with a decline in vehicle safety.
In order to overcome these challenges and to enhance the safety of the Transport system Government of India has designed an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) under Automotive Industry Standard – AIS140 Certified devices.
“What is AIS-140 Vehicle Tracking System?”
Automotive Industry Standard 140 (AIS 140) is a set of standards published by the Automotive Research Association of India ( ARAI ) designed to build an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). This is introduced to execute enhance safety, Confidentiality of Data, Privacy, and Integrity feature along with assisting the workers. This assistance comes during the vehicle operation by providing the necessary details about their journey. These features include the safety measures, vehicle tracking systems, GPS, driver monitoring devices, and a lot more. In a developing country like India, public transportation is used by the majority of the population. There have been several cases where the passenger has suffered a great loss directly or indirectly in public transportation due to lack of such necessary features and directives, there have been some cases that have even led to brutal crimes against the passenger.
According to the Automotive Industry Standard 140 (AIS 140), it is mandatory for all public transport and commercial vehicles to deploy vehicle tracking systems with camera surveillance and emergency buttons. The public transport vehicle will travel long distances between cities therefore the control center needs to keep track of the vehicles through the vehicle location tracking and also use the camera to check the driver, conductor, and passenger behavior too. These emergency buttons are installed with the AIS 140 device and connected to the control center.
AIS 140 device clearly specifies that emergency buttons will be placed anywhere in the vehicle and should be accessible by any passenger and also the vehicle will have video surveillance, recording, and data retrieval system.
Intercity and intracity public buses need AIS 140 GPS devices to cut down unnecessary fuel, repairs and maintenance as this device helps improve route efficiency, reduce idle time and prevents misuse of the bus by its drivers.
